Rot Can Happen in All Natural Materials
Rot is caused by a fungus that feeds on a natural material because they are unable to produce their own food. Natural materials include wood, cotton and cardboard.
The condition of the material can make it more or less prone to rot. If the material is damp and in a warm, low circulation area it will be prone to the damaging effects of the fungus.
To remove rot from an area first check how deep the rot is, would it be better to replace the whole object / area or is it worth fixing?
If you decide to fix the area, try and evaluate how badly the area is rotted.
Has the rot just attacked the surface?
Is the area still wet?
Are there parts that need to be dug out before fixing?
First dry the area using either a fan or another form of forced air movement. If there are any parts that have turned to black and stay moist, dig them out with a screwdriver.
Next choose efficient epoxy filler for the type of material that is rotted.
Follow the directions on the epoxy filler to fix the rotted area and for drying time
After the area is ‘cured’ and the epoxy has dried, check to see if the manufacturer of the epoxy recommends using a resin or a sealant over the area.
The best way to prevent rot on a natural material is to keep the air around the material well circulated and the material dry.
