The Engine on Your Boat is Always at Risk of Corrosion

When it comes to boat engines it of course depends on whether you have an in board or an outboard engine.
Outboard
The basics for an outboard engine mean you have a different set of environment al challenges. Basically you are out there in the open so you need to make sure that not only is the engine secure to the boat you need to make sure that all of the external areas are checked continuously.
First make sure that when connecting your engine to the stern transom that you are connecting it to a surface that will not develop any corrosion or rust whatsoever, engine to wood, engine to fiberglass etc. The cowling (cover) of the engine must be secure at all times and the water repellant stripping kept in good shape.
With the cowling off the engine offers many areas of attention. Make sure the carburetor intake device is always kept clean and when the engine is not in use make sure to use a corrosion inhibitor or fogging oil. The ignition and spark plug areas should be coated often during use with the same type of products during use periods.
Overall it is a matter of being diligent and aware that you need to maintain this engine at all times in an anti corrosive way. Don’t worry about over doing the spraying of product, better to have too much instead of too little.

Inboard
If you have an inboard engine all of the above applies, you just need to look at it differently. Make sure your engine compartment is secure, dry and sealed against the outside elements. Make sure all hoses are well connected not only to the engine but to the boat hull, compartment or wherever it is connected. Of course use an anti-corrosive spray as often as possible to all areas of the engine and any possible areas where corrosion or rust could happen.
The key to having a well running engine whether inboard or outboard is to keep it clean, dry, and well protected at all times from the salt water that is its worst enemy.
For freshwater (lakes, rivers) all of the above applies as rust is always lurking around the corner.
