Corrosion Prevention Tips For Around The Outside of the Home
- If you live on the beach consider washing down your house at least twice a year to get the build up of salt and dirt off of the exterior surface. Use just clean fresh water or try using the Windex outdoor spray product that has a mild soap solution, rinse or don't rinse, up to you. If you don't rinse it off remember you have created a positive barrier to the salt and dirt build up.
- If you have outside air conditioning compressor units and live in a salty environment, wash them every month with just a good hosing down of fresh water. You may consider a light coating of car wax to create a barrier against corrosion and rust, and to protect the exterior covering for longer lasting use.
- Outdoor lighting is a great challenge, it’s not always what you think when the lights go out. Take the bulb out shake it to make sure the filament is still good, if so take some anti-corrosion, spray the metal connection part of the bulb, wipe clean and try it in the fixture. Half the time it will shine on, if it doesn't work spray a little of your anti corrosion spray right into the fixture receptacle and see if that helps. Can't hurt!!!
- Got a dripping rusty gutter? Deal with it NOW, it will only get worse. Use a wire brush, brush away the rust build-up, spray with a form of rust killer, apply a rust inhibitor product, fill in the holes or leaks with silicon, paint and you're finished.
