Your Child's Safety Could be in Danger

Preventing corrosion on your children's play structure is more important than you think.  A rusty play structure is not safe and could give way under your child causing them to fall.
To prevent this from happening and to keep your child's play structure corrosion free it is important to maintain the structure and also pay attention to the materials the structure is made of.
Depending on what materials your play structure is made from, there are different things you can do to maintain the quality and safety of your play structure.

Plastic

If your play structure is made from plastic and other man made materials find out what type of plastic it is made of.  Is it high density panels, or hollow panels?  High density panels resist damage from the sun and environment better than hollow panels.  Hollow panels can collect water inside them if the panel has been punctured.  If water or moisture sits too long within a panel mold and mildew could be a problem.
Apply a wax or a silicone based spray to the plastic to help them weather better.
Look at what joins the panels together, are any of the bolts rusty?  If you are buying new make sure to use galvanized hardware to join pieces of the play structure.  If your play structure has metal posts in it, check to see if these posts are galvanized steel or just coated steel.  If they are not made of galvanized steel and are scratched, then they can rust and will need to be coated with a rust resistant paint.

Wood

If you have or are building / buying a play structure out of wood it is important to realize the ongoing maintenance of a wooden play structure.  Every 2-3 years it is important to apply a stain to the wood.  Choose a stain that is weather, moisture, and UV resistant, with a mildewcide in the stain to provide the best protection for your play structure. Before applying the stain, thoroughly clean the structure first.
Make sure every join and bolt you use is galvanized so rust around bolts and joins does not affect the wood around it.

Ground Cover

And lastly if you choose to use sawdust or another natural ground cover remember to turn it and move it around every few weeks to keep moisture trapped within the ground cover from rotting the material.
