How to Keep Your Railing and Decking in its Best Condition

Once you have a deck, it instantly gets use, sometimes year round depending on the climate you live in.  After all the time and planning that goes into creating a deck, the last think you want is rusty nails or rotted wood.

Treated lumber is an option for decking and railing.  To protect treated lumber from the elements it needs to be stained or painted every 2-3 years.  By using a stain that protects from UV rays, moisture and contains a mildewcide will protect your deck so you may enjoy it without worry.  Use nails that are specifically for decking or outdoor use such as galvanized nails to add more protection to your deck.

Composite decking is a newer option that claims to offer less maintenance than a wood deck.  With any deck it needs to be cleaned regularly to keep it in its best conditions.  Some composite decks do have a semi porous surface that moisture can get trapped result in mold spots.  Composite decking can also fade from the sun.
