Removing Rust Inside your Home is Different than the Outside

Rust Around the House
To remove rust around the house first look at the surface the rust is on and then determine what you can use on that surface.  Can you use steel wool?  Heavy duty abrasive cleaning products?  Or something less abrasive such as WD-40 or vinegar?

Some common ways to remove rust are to first remove as much as possible with steel wool if that area allows it, and then use either a commercial rust product, or a home-made alternative such as vinegar, vegetable oil, lemon juice or rubbing alcohol.  Try to start with the least strong product and move to the harshest commercial product to minimize damage to the area with rust.

Fabrics
If you have rust stains on fabric try using vinegar or lemon juice and salt on the stain.  This can help to lighten rust stains and then use an oxi-wash on the fabric.  Be sure to check before drying that the stain is gone.  It is harder to remove a stain from dried fabrics than wet ones.

If vinegar or lemon juice doesn't work try using a stonger commercial rust remover such as CLR or a rust stain remover.  Apply to the area with a small toothbrush.

No matter what product you use on fabric, be sure to test it first on a small area of the fabric.  Some of these products will damage colored fabrics.
